About this retro voice

SYSTEM INFORMATION

What is Microsoft Sam text to speech?

Microsoft Sam was the default English male text-to-speech voice in Windows 2000 and Windows XP. People still search for it because its stiff, unmistakable delivery became part of early PC, screen-reader, animation, and internet culture.

Modern Windows versions no longer ship Sam as their default voice. This page recreates the same broad retro-computer experience with browser-based SAM, a different synthesizer originally created for 1980s computers. The result is intentionally mechanical rather than natural.

Microsoft Sam voice generator FAQ

Is this the original Microsoft Sam voice?

No. This is an unofficial browser-based retro voice generator powered by SAM (Software Automatic Mouth). Microsoft Sam was a different SAPI voice included with Windows 2000 and Windows XP. This site is not affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft.

Is this Microsoft Sam text to speech tool free?

Yes. You can generate, play, and download retro speech without creating an account. The synthesis runs locally in your browser.

Does it work on Windows 10, Windows 11, Mac, and mobile?

Yes. The generator works in a modern browser, so it does not require the old Microsoft Sam voice or a Windows XP computer. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari are recommended.

Can I download the generated voice as MP3?

The generator downloads uncompressed WAV audio. WAV preserves the original 8-bit retro sound and can be converted to MP3 later with an audio editor or converter.

Is my text uploaded or stored?

No. Your text and generated audio stay in your browser. This tool does not send the text to our text-to-speech API or store a copy of the WAV file.

Is the voice generated by AI?

No. SAM uses compact pronunciation rules and formant synthesis inspired by early 1980s speech software. Its mechanical sound comes from classic synthesis, not a modern neural AI voice model.

Why does the retro voice pronounce some words strangely?

The speech rules were designed for short English phrases and have a limited vocabulary model. Try shorter sentences, add punctuation, spell unusual names phonetically, or adjust the speed and mouth settings.

Can I change the voice?

Yes. Choose a preset or change speed, pitch, mouth, and throat values. Classic SAM uses speed 72, pitch 64, mouth 128, and throat 128.

Can I use the generated audio commercially?

We cannot grant commercial rights to the underlying SAM implementation. The browser engine is based on a reverse-engineered historical commercial program and does not have a standard open-source license. Review the relevant rights before commercial use.
